LincolnCampaign2.jpg

The presidential campaign and election of 1860 unveiled Abraham Lincoln's views and efforts for fundamental change in the nation. With slavery as the dividing topic for the parties, Lincoln set out to express his opinions to opposing lands.

Abraham Lincoln traveled to the Kansas Territory at the end of 1859. On December 3, he spoke in Leavenworth, Kansas, occompanied by a brass band and local officals. He discussed his thoughts on the institution of slavery and his issues with the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

Several months after visiting Kansas, Lincoln advised another, "If I went West, I think I would go to Kansas--to Leavenworth or Atchinson. Both of them are, and will continue to be, fine growing places."
